Big Egg

Ok, this video is a little more complicated! I am signing off camera, reading a book to Miss Kat. I was hoping to have her just repeat what I was saying with her voice to show off her speech 3 months post activation....that didn't happen. She is instead, reacting to what I am saying and sort of telling the story too.

The whole video is captioned. The parts where she just signs is in parenthesises, when she does both, we caption the spoken language only. If you understand ASL, you will probably get more of the story, but the point of the video was really just to show off her word approximations at 3 months hearing with her CI (don't worry about the story).

Wow- she has a pretty big vocabulary for only hearing for three months! I love how little kids are so animated. If only we could borrow some of their energy!

Wow!! Your daughter is amazing! I love watching her signed videos! She has great story telling skills and is very expressionable!

Ha! That's a lotta body language too! What energy, sheesh, if only I had a third of that.

How old, did you say? Was all this language since her CI, or did she already have plenty before that?

She's quite a little storyteller, one day you're going to wish she'll learn when to shut up! ;-)

Almost all of it is post CI. She had a few words (baby, Mama, Daddy, doggie) but it has exploded since activation.

Her knowledge of vocabulary is impressive. Apparently her previous receptive language, including ASL, contributed to her ability to master the sounds of the words very quickly after C.I. activation.

Miss Kat certainly has a flair for storytelling.

I just wanted to say you and your husband are an amazing parents. Many parents decide when the child gets the implant to "throw away" using ASL. You and your family aren't doing that..You are letting your daughter keep signing and you as a family will keep signing. Now if only more parents were like you guys. :)

Enjoyed watching her sign skills, but frankly could not understand her attempts at speech at all.

First, are you hearing? Have you ever been around deaf people or even a toddler? And last but not least, I think it is the best 3 MONTH OLD speech EVER! You realize that a typical child has 12 months of listening before a single word comes out? And then it takes at LEAST 2 more years to become intelligeble at all.

Oh, and ummmm...screw you!

I have been around literally thousands of deaf children, toddlers, and adults.

And isn't that lovely language for a parent so focused on speech. Plan on teaching your daughter to curse like that, too?

Miss Kat's Parents said...

I didn't curse, obviously.

Yes, I am focused on speech, and I am not embarrassed or ashamed of it. Miss Kat deserves the opportunity to develop both.

I have no idea how I am "so focused" on speech though, since ASL is her first and primary language...what more do you people want?

"Screw you" is certainly not something one says in polite company. The intent is clear. So, yes, you did curse.

And all we want is a bit of consistency.

Who is "WE"? Are they watching me right now??? Is there some huge conspiracy of people trying to figure out if my daughter is going to be turned to the "dark side" and DARE to use spoken language? GASP! To have options!!! What a horror!

Oh, and you never answered about your own hearing status...

Also, I LOVE that you keep coming back here to argue with me. What kind of person goes on to the blog of a child's journey and tries to insult the parents and puts down a child's progress??

Classy!
