My report from EDHI (part one of many!)

First of all, I had a great time!!! I am so glad that I had the privilege to attend the conference. I learned so much, met some great people, and got to network some for Hands & Voices!

The first thing I learned was in the opening plenary session. It was by ChristineYoshinaga-Itano. The session about sharing the data from some longitudinal studies. It reviewed standardized testing and language of deaf and hard of hearing kids. The data shows some really great things!  The first was from Colorado. They followed kids from 3rd to 12th grade. The goal was ONE YEARS GROWTH IN ONE YEARS TIME. And 40% of kids made just that, and actually, 40.8% made GREATER than that! So, that means that over 80% of kids in Colorado are making at least adequate, age and grade level appropriate progress. Woo Hoo!

She also discussed language  measures and outcomes. These were assessments given in 8 different states to over 250 kids. They looked at expressive language, comprehension of complex language, and vocabulary. It was more great news! Almost 80% of deaf and hard of hearing kids scored in the normal range for expressive language, 75% for comprehension of complex language, and almost 60% for vocabulary. (Vocabulary is often  the weakest point, because deaf kids struggle to pick up new words incidentally.)

I was really impressed with this information. That means that if we get our kiddos age appropriate with their language, and then continue to have one years growth in one year, we will have deaf students graduating with language and literacy skills commiserate with their hearing peers...which is, of course the goal!

And  before people go crazy asking the question, this study included both ASL and spoken language users. There were several Deaf schools that were study sites, and some public school programs.

I loved getting some positive news! It turns out that this generation of deaf kids are actually doing very well!

Thank you for sharing this exciting news with us. This is what happens when we keep an open mind and explore all communication options. Don't know about others but I'm looking forward to learning more about this research. Thanks again!

Thanks for the great information! For nearly 10 years of EHDI conference's hosting, 40 percent of those young kids with under 5 are thriving! Although, they hardly ever cannot catch up the level of vocabulary category with the hearing peers, EHDI is striving to get there. With the medical and electronic technology growth, it will catch up in 10 years from now. EHDI is ensuring all the communication options to be in the conference. Needless to say, per the video for the second time in less than 2 years,(youtube.com/jonlenois), we don't need the 50 percent of deaf stakeholders to present at the conference.

Despite on the demonstrations, Karl White went through his tough task for EHDI conference and he'll do fine.

Not 40%, 80%. You must have misread.

opps, it was for Colorado. I thought it would be for the nationwide. EHDI in Colorado has 80 percent of success alone. That's great news. Hopefully researchers in the USA can report to the EHDI for the statistical engineering.

Thanks for correcting me. :-)

No man who truly believes in democracy would say the things that Dr. Karl White has said below.
Only Fascists and Communists wouldd say what Dr. Karl White has said discriminatorily below. A letter of complaint will be sent to the Federal government about Dr. White as an oppressor of deaf adults. Here is what Dr. White has said:

Deaf people don’t know what is best for their babies” ~ Karl White

“It would be even better if they would register for the meeting and join the discusion, because EHDI will be stronger if we have all the stakeholders at the table and everyone is working together to make EHDI programs better.”

Addendum:

Dr. Karl White also says:

EHDI focuses on deaf babies, parents and medical professionals only. Not Deaf adults, Deaf mentors, and Deaf Stakeholders.

END TOKENISM!

Jean..

That quote was put into Karl's mouth. No one was able to confirm that he said it. You have no video showing him saying it. There was a discussion among you guys about how to cite the quote, and it was agreed to just keep stating it, in hopes that it will be believed.

What you guys just did was slander Karl White.

Karl explicitly said in the video that he never said that.

Jean,

How inappropriate to claim a quote without providing a link or source that Karl White said "Deaf people don’t know what is best for their babies."

Then again, that quote would also mean that it's the parents who know what is best for their babies....not Deaf people...because parents ultimately make the informed decision on what's best. Not you or anybody else.

Also, Jean, providing a source based on hearsay is not proof of what Karl said. Either you have an audio or video of saying exactly that, or a print of his conversation in an article of him saying it.

Goodness, can no one make a positive remark without turning it into something it wasn't even about! Rhetorical question, I guess.. At least save the Karl White drama for Karl White related posts. I know there are many. Thanks Miss Kats's parents on behalf of all the children with promising future. I've met many of these kids in my blessed career who have benefit from EHDI regardless of parents individual decisions and child's path to communication liberation.
Peace all! Miss Kat's family Keep up the sharing. I've learned so much that can't be learned from a book.
