Miss Kat wanted to sing "Jingle Bells" tonight, and wasn't going to let something as trivial as not knowing the words stop her! So, Daddy found a karaoke video, and this is her working her butt off to try to read the words fast enough to sing it. I would love to caption it, but it is incomprehensible!

So cute! She looks like she loves the karaoke machine! I love Christmas - I can't believe the time for Jingle Bells and Rudolph is already here (time to add Christmas music to the playlist on the iPod, I suppose)!
Great video! And I can understand quite a bit. I saw that you wrote me but could never find your email address so am writing here regarding Nik. He too is deaf w/ CI's. Would love to get your opinions. If you get a chance, could you write me at boydbunch@gmail.com. Thanks. Stephanie.
Incomprehensible? hmm..
Just curious - does Kat know that you're putting these videos and countless pictures of her on the internet?
From my understanding she can make an informed decision on these things, as evident in her decision of being a vegetarian.
Yes she does. We always ask her before we post a video, she is well aware of my blog.
That's good to know.
I'll be honest... I would have thought the parent would be the best person that understands their child. When you said her English was incomprehensible it took me back a little. From all the advertising you do on the forum, I thought otherwise.
:(
Her SINGING is incomprehensible but her language is not. She is attempting to sing a song that she doesn't know the words to. She is mumbling and filling space with nonsense words.
It has nothing to do with her actual functional language.
So oral skills =/= english?
I'm confused now... ?_?
Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the idea because of your life experiences, so I will attempt to explain. If a person is attempting to sing a song when they don't know the words they mumble, fill in nonsense words, and jumble up the words they actually know to fill in the blanks. That is precisely what my daughter is doing in this video. It is not an example of her language. It is a cute video of her trying to sing a song. It is not incomprehensible because of her spoken language, or because she is deaf. A hearing child singing a song they don't know would be incomprehensible too.
oh... ok.
Since I am not posting on AD any more.. I'd like to ask you this question...
If Clarke is so successful and the epitome of Deaf-ED - Why is your daughter in an oral school instead of being in Clarke's program and mainstreamed? (withholding the name out of respect.)
Clarke and my daughter's school are very similar. They have the same ideals and general philosophy. They follow similar curriculums. Clarke and my daughter's school have very similar goals. They mainstream the kids when they are age appropriate in their language and academics. We looked into Clarke, but decided on the school she currently attends.
